Zilog, Inc., previously stylized as ZiLOG, is an American manufacturer of microprocessors, microcontrollers and application-specific embedded system-on-chip products. The company was founded in 1974 by Federico Faggin and Ralph Ungermann, who were soon joined by Masatoshi Shima, all of whom had left Intel after working on the 4004 and 8080 microprocessors. The most famous product of the company is the Z80 microprocessor, which played an important role in the evolution of early computing. It is software-compatible with the Intel 8080 and offered lower cost and increased performance.
