The Fort Worth and Rio Grande Railway was an American railroad company chartered in Texas on June 1, 1885, conceived by Fort Worth civic leaders including Buckley Burton Paddock as part of a planned transcontinental route to the Mexican port of Topolobampo. Backed by the Vanderbilt railroad syndicate, construction began in 1886 and reached Brownwood, 144 miles from Fort Worth, by 1891. The Frisco Railroad took control in 1901, and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway purchased the line in 1937, merging it into its Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe subsidiary in 1948.
