The Osage Valley and Southern Kansas Railroad was chartered in 1857 by the Missouri Legislature to build a line from a point on the Pacific Railroad near present day Tipton, Missouri, to Emporia, Kansas. The company was reorganized in 1880 and 1881 as the Benton County, St. Louis and Southern Railway before being leased to Jay Gould's Missouri Pacific Railway, and it ceased operations when the Missouri Pacific Railroad received permission from the Interstate Commerce Commission to abandon the line in 1935, with the last train running on April 30, 1936.
