Seaboard Air Line Railroad

The Seaboard Air Line Railroad was an American railroad company that existed from April 14, 1900, until July 1, 1967, when it merged with its longtime rival the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Headquartered in Portsmouth, Virginia until 1958 and then in Richmond, Virginia, the company advertised courteous passenger service and, along with competitors including the Atlantic Coast Line, Florida East Coast Railway and Southern Railway, was a major contributor to the economic development of the southeastern United States, carrying vacationers to Florida and hauling southern timber, minerals and produce, especially Florida citrus. Its main line ran from Richmond, Virginia to Tampa, Florida, and by 1927 its routes extended to West Palm Beach and Miami; at the end of 1960 it reported operating 4,135 miles of road.
