Richmond and Alleghany Railroad

The Richmond and Alleghany Railroad was an American railroad built along the James River in Virginia, following the route of the James River and Kanawha Canal from Richmond to Buchanan, and reaching Clifton Forge in combination with the Buchanan and Clifton Forge Railway. Formed by a deed dated March 4, 1880, and headquartered in Richmond, it provided a water level standard gauge route from Richmond through the Blue Ridge Mountains at Balcony Falls to a point west of Lynchburg, before it was acquired by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in 1888 and 1889.
