Raleigh and Augusta Air Line Railroad

The Raleigh and Augusta Air Line Railroad began as the Chatham Railroad, chartered by the North Carolina General Assembly in February 1851, and took its later name in 1871 when it aimed to build a direct standard gauge line from Raleigh, North Carolina, through Columbia, South Carolina, to Augusta, Georgia; South Carolina chartered the company in February 1878, but the line never got past the state line, where it met the Palmetto Railroad. By 1884 it ran about 100 miles from Raleigh south through Hamlet to Gibson at the North Carolina and South Carolina border, and most of its stock was controlled by the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad. Weakened by the Panic of 1873, it was absorbed into the Seaboard Air Line Railroad in November 1901; Seaboard's own 1967 merger with the Atlantic Coast Line created the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, later folded into CSX Transportation, and the original corridor remains part of CSX's network today.
