Pensacola and Georgia Railroad

The Pensacola and Georgia Railroad was chartered in January 1853 with a plan to build east from Pensacola, Florida, but construction actually began at Tallahassee and pushed eastward instead. The company bought the existing Tallahassee Rail Road in 1855, opened its first new section from Tallahassee to Capitola in 1857, reached Lake City in 1860 where it connected with the Florida, Atlantic and Gulf Central Railroad, and opened a branch from Tallahassee to Quincy in 1863. The line became a key link across Florida's Panhandle and interior during the mid nineteenth century before later mergers folded it into the network that became the Florida Central and Western Railroad.
