Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad

The Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad was incorporated by an act of the Florida Legislature on March 4, 1881, to build a line connecting Pensacola with the Apalachicola River near Chattahoochee, a distance of roughly 160 miles, ending Pensacola's isolation from rail service across the sparsely populated Florida Panhandle. William D. Chipley and Frederick R. De Funiak served as its founding officers, and both are remembered in the names of towns along the route. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad took control by purchasing a majority of the company's three million dollars in capital stock and bonds on May 9, 1881; construction finished in 1883 and the Pensacola and Atlantic was absorbed into the Louisville and Nashville as its P&A Division by 1891.
