Georgia Railroad and Banking Company

The Georgia Railroad and Banking Company was a historic railroad and banking company that operated in the U.S. state of Georgia from 1845 to 1982. Chartered in 1833 in Augusta, Georgia, its charter was amended in 1835 to add banking to its railroad business, an unusual dual structure for the period. By 1967 it was moving hundreds of millions of ton-miles of freight over 331 miles of road, before its rail properties were merged into the Seaboard System Railroad in 1982 and its banking operations were later absorbed into what is now Wells Fargo.
