The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, known as the DL&W, was a United States Class 1 railroad incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1853 through a merger of smaller rail companies. Headquartered in Scranton, Pennsylvania, it connected Buffalo, New York and Hoboken, New Jersey and primarily hauled anthracite coal from northeastern Pennsylvania to markets in New York City. Facing declining coal traffic after World War II, the DL&W merged with the Erie Railroad in 1960 to form the Erie Lackawanna Railroad.
