Atlanta and West Point Railroad

The Atlanta and West Point Rail Road, reporting mark AWP, was a railroad in the U.S. state of Georgia forming the eastern portion of the Atlanta-Selma West Point Route, originally chartered in 1847 as the Atlanta and LaGrange Rail Road and renamed in 1857; construction began in 1849-50 and was completed in May 1854. Headquartered in Atlanta, it built and operated an 86-mile line to West Point originally laid to 5-foot gauge, converted to 4 feet 9 inches in 1886 and later to standard gauge; in 1967 it reported 232 million revenue ton-miles and 3 million passenger-miles across 93 miles of operated track, though passenger service ended on 7 January 1970. The railroad operated until 1983, when it passed into the Seaboard System Railroad and is today owned by CSX Transportation.
