Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railway

The Pittsburgh and West Virginia Railway operated between the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Wheeling, West Virginia areas, originally chartered in 1904 as the Wabash Pittsburgh Terminal Railway as part of George J. Gould's transcontinental expansion plans before reorganizing under its current name in 1916 following financial difficulties. Its line ran from Connellsville, Pennsylvania to Pittsburgh Junction, Ohio, reaching 223 miles of track by 1960 after a 1931 extension made it part of the Alphabet Route coalition of independent railways. The Pennsylvania Railroad acquired majority ownership in 1929, the line was leased to the Norfolk and Western Railway in 1964 and transferred to the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway in 1990; the railroad property is now owned by Power REIT and remains leased to operating carriers.
