Philadelphia, Newtown and New York Railroad

The Philadelphia, Newtown and New York Railroad was chartered on April 2, 1860, as the Philadelphia and Montgomery County Railroad Company and took its later name in 1873, despite never actually reaching New York. Operating in southeastern Pennsylvania, it grew into a 22 mile branch line to Newtown by March 1877 and ran passenger service under a series of operators. The company survived as a separate corporate entity until 1945, when it and other small controlled lines were merged into the Reading Company, and ownership later passed to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority; SEPTA discontinued service beyond Fox Chase in January 1983, and the surviving portion now forms SEPTA's Fox Chase Branch.
