The Nesquehoning Valley Railroad was a standard-gauge shortline railroad incorporated in Pennsylvania on May 14, 1861, built through Carbon and Schuylkill Counties to carry anthracite coal from the Southeastern Coal Region to the Eastern seaboard. Construction ran from 1861 to 1872 including the Hauto Tunnel, and the completed line was leased in full by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company, which subleased sections to the Central Railroad of New Jersey and the Lehigh and New England Railroad.
