Cumberland Mine Railroad

The Cumberland Mine Railroad is a private carrier mine railroad serving the Cumberland Coal Resources mine near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. United States Steel originally built the line, which began operating in November 1976 as a way to move steam coal for export to Canada. Ownership of the railroad has changed several times since, and as of January 2021 it belonged to Iron Senergy Holding LLC, based in Louisville, Kentucky, with its coal now mostly bought by domestic power plants rather than exported. The railroad runs about 17 miles from a coal preparation plant near Kirby to the Alicia Dock barge loading facility on the Monongahela River, and it operates as an isolated line with no connection to the wider North American rail network. Its small fleet, one EMD SD40 and two EMD SD38-2 diesel locomotives, typically hauls 35 to 38 loaded coal cars per trip.
