Central Railroad of New Jersey

The Central Railroad of New Jersey, also known as the Jersey Central or New Jersey Central, was a Class I railroad company with origins in the 1830s, formally organized as the Central Railroad Company of New Jersey in 1849. The company operated a major rail network centered on New Jersey and was headquartered at 148 Liberty Street in New York City. It remained one of the significant railroads of the northeastern United States until April 1, 1976, when it was absorbed into Conrail along with several other bankrupt regional railroads. Much of its former main line remains in use today, carrying the Raritan Valley Line passenger service and, in Phillipsburg, forming part of the Lehigh Line.
