Peoria and Pekin Union Railway

The Peoria and Pekin Union Railway is a switching and terminal railroad in Illinois that began operating in 1881, based at a main yard and roundhouse in East Peoria. It connects the various rail lines that converge on the Peoria area, receiving railcars from different carriers, sorting them and redistributing them onward, and it ran hourly passenger service until ridership decline during the Great Depression led to its suspension on November 7, 1931. The railway is jointly owned today by Canadian National Railway, Norfolk Southern Railway and Union Pacific Railroad, switches trains for eight other railways, processes more than 170,000 railcars a year, and owns a bridge across the Illinois River; it has been leased to the Tazewell and Peoria Railroad since 2004.
