Monon Railroad

The Monon Railroad, formally the Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville Railway, was an American Class I railroad that operated almost entirely within Indiana from 1897 to 1971, connecting Chicago, Indianapolis, Louisville and Michigan City. By 1970 it ran 540 miles of road on 792 miles of track and was notable as the longest Class I railroad in the country with no double track. The Monon was merged into the Louisville and Nashville Railroad on July 31, 1971, and much of its former right-of-way is now owned by CSX Transportation, with sections converted into recreational trails.
