Milwaukee Road

The Milwaukee Road, formally the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, was a Class I freight and passenger railroad headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, incorporated in 1847 and operated until 1986. At its peak in 1929 its network covered 11,248 miles across the Midwest and into the Pacific Northwest, and the railroad was known for its Hiawatha streamliner passenger trains and for electrifying long stretches of its mountain routes between 1914 and 1920. It filed for bankruptcy three times, in 1925, 1935 and 1977, abandoned its Pacific Extension in 1980, and its remaining lines were merged into the Soo Line Railroad, then a Canadian Pacific Railway subsidiary, effective January 1, 1986.
