Lake Erie and Western Railroad

The Lake Erie and Western Railroad was a railroad incorporated in Illinois on February 10, 1887 that operated in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Its main line ran 412 miles from Sandusky, Ohio west to Peoria, Illinois, passing through Fremont and Fostoria in Ohio, Muncie and Lafayette in Indiana, and Bloomington in Illinois, with additional branch lines in Indiana. Known as the Natural Gas Route, it carried freight and passengers. The New York Central Railroad took control of the company in 1900 and ran it as a separate entity for two decades before selling it to the Nickel Plate Road in 1922, and it was dissolved the following year.
