Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway

The Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway operated in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and along Wisconsin's Lake Superior shoreline, formed from an earlier predecessor dating to 1855 and going into operation as a consolidated company in December 1886, connecting Sault Ste. Marie and St. Ignace, Michigan westward through Marquette to Superior, Wisconsin and Duluth, Minnesota. Canadian Pacific Railway took control in 1888 and operated it as a branded subsidiary until 1961; at its 1911 peak it ran 623 miles of track with 82 locomotives. Passenger service ended in January 1958 after the Mackinac Bridge opened, and the company was merged into the Soo Line Railroad in 1961.
