Detroit and Mackinac Railway

The Detroit and Mackinac Railway was a railroad in the northeastern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, established in 1894 and known informally as the Turtle Line. Running from Bay City north to Cheboygan with offices in Tawas City, it evolved from the narrow-gauge Detroit, Bay City and Alpena Railroad and originally hauled timber from the region's forests before adding limestone shipments. In 1946 it became the first all-diesel-haul railroad in the United States, reached Class I status by the 1940s, and was sold to the Lake State Railway in 1992.
