Chicago and Milwaukee Railway

The Chicago and Milwaukee Railway was formed on June 22, 1863, through the merger of the Chicago and Milwaukee Railroad, chartered in Illinois in 1853, and the Milwaukee and Chicago Railroad, chartered in Wisconsin in 1851. It operated a 44.6 mile standard gauge line running north from Chicago through Waukegan, Illinois into Wisconsin, roughly paralleling the Lake Michigan shoreline; the two predecessor lines had been ceremonially joined at Kenosha, Wisconsin on May 19, 1855. On January 11, 1881 it absorbed the Northwestern Union Railway, and on April 12, 1881 it merged with the Milwaukee and Madison Railway and the Sheboygan and Western Railway to form the Chicago, Milwaukee and North Western Railway, which was itself absorbed into the Chicago and North Western Railway in June 1883.
