Central Railroad of Indianapolis

The Central Railroad of Indianapolis is a Class III short line freight railroad in north central Indiana, formed in 1989 when Norfolk Southern leased it 24 miles of former Nickel Plate Road track between Kokomo and Marion under its Thoroughbred Shortline program. Headquartered in Indianapolis, it operates about 58 miles of track linking Marion, Hartford City, Amboy and Kokomo, hauling mostly grain and metal products in cars up to 286,000 pounds; in 2008 it carried around 8,000 carloads. It interchanges with Norfolk Southern at Marion and with the Toledo, Peoria and Western at Kokomo, and has been owned by Genesee and Wyoming since that company acquired its parent in 2012.
