Ann Arbor Railroad (1895-1976)

The Ann Arbor Railroad was an American railroad company chartered on September 21, 1895 as successor to the Toledo, Ann Arbor and North Michigan Railway, running roughly 294 route miles between Toledo, Ohio and the Michigan ports of Elberta and Frankfort, including train ferry service across Lake Michigan. It also operated the 39 mile Manistique and Lake Superior Railroad as a subsidiary, and in 1967 it reported 572 million net ton miles of revenue freight. The company moved its headquarters from Toledo to St. Louis, Michigan in 1925 and then to Dearborn, Michigan in 1963, and it ceased operating as a railroad on April 1, 1976 after a 1973 bankruptcy, after which the State of Michigan acquired most of the line.
