The Alton Railroad, reporting mark A, was the final name of a railroad linking Chicago to Alton, Illinois, St. Louis, Missouri, and Kansas City, Missouri, formed in 1931 when the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad acquired and renamed the Chicago and Alton Railroad, whose reorganization Jacob Bunn had led in the 1860s. Headquartered in Chicago, its main lines connected Chicago to St. Louis with a branch to Kansas City; by 1950 the company had fully replaced steam locomotives with diesel power. The Alton Railroad operated until 31 May 1947, when it merged into the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad.
