Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington Railroad

The Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington Railroad was an American Class I railroad formed in 1902 when the Pennsylvania Railroad merged two of its southern subsidiaries, the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railroad and the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad. Headquartered in Philadelphia, it operated a 131-mile main line connecting Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., now part of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, and became a co-owner of Washington Union Station in 1907. Following Penn Central's 1970 bankruptcy, its right-of-way was sold to Amtrak in 1976 while its freight operations transferred to Conrail.
