Oregon Pacific Railroad (1880-1894)

The Oregon Pacific Railroad was organized on September 15, 1880, as the successor to the Willamette Valley and Coast Railroad, itself tracing to an 1872 predecessor company. Under owner Thomas Egenton Hogg, it built a line from Corvallis west through Toledo to the coast at Yaquina and east into the Cascade foothills at Idanha, with Hogg envisioning it as part of a future transcontinental route and operating steamships to carry traffic onward from Yaquina. The company's finances collapsed after two of those steamships, the Yaquina City and the Yaquina Bay, wrecked in 1887 and 1888, and it entered bankruptcy in October 1890. It was sold in 1894 to A. B. Hammond, who reorganized it as the Oregon Central and Eastern Railway, a line that later became the Corvallis and Eastern Railroad before Southern Pacific Railroad acquired it in 1907.
