The Atlantic and Pacific Railroad was incorporated by the United States Congress in 1866 under the control of the explorer John C. Fremont and his associates. It built two separate segments, one from St. Louis, Missouri to Tulsa, Oklahoma and another from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Needles, California, but never completed the central section joining them. The company ceased to exist in 1897 when its assets were divided by foreclosure, its western portion becoming part of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway's Santa Fe Pacific Railroad subsidiary and its eastern portion going to the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, both of which eventually merged into BNSF Railway in 1995.
