South Wales Railway

The South Wales Railway was a broad-gauge main line railway, incorporated by act of Parliament in 1845, that opened in stages from 1850 to connect the Great Western Railway at Gloucester with South Wales, with an original ambition of reaching Fishguard to support an Irish ferry crossing and transatlantic trade that never became an important part of its business. Neyland served as the line's western terminus until 1906. The company amalgamated with the Great Western Railway in 1863, and its track was converted from broad to standard gauge in 1873, with most of its original main line still in use today.
