Grosmont Railway

The Grosmont Railway was a horse drawn plateway in Monmouthshire, Wales, authorized by an Act of Parliament that received royal assent on May 20, 1812, with construction starting in 1817 and the roughly seven mile line opening in 1819 on a 3 foot 6 inch gauge engineered by John Hodgkinson. It extended the earlier Llanvihangel Railway from Llanvihangel Crucorney to Monmouth Cap on the Herefordshire border, and in 1829 the Hereford Railway connected to it there. The company sold its line and related tramroads in 1846 to the Newport, Abergavenny and Hereford Railway Company for 16,250 pounds, and the new owner replaced the horse drawn plateway with a standard gauge steam railway; the old route today forms part of the A465 road, with a surviving embankment at Werngifford protected as a scheduled monument.
