Carmarthen and Cardigan Railway

The Carmarthen and Cardigan Railway was a broad-gauge railway company in Wales, incorporated in 1854 to build a line north from Carmarthen that reached Llandysul by 1864 but never achieved its intended extension to Cardigan. Financially troubled from the start, the company went into receivership in 1864 and remained insolvent for the rest of its independent existence until the Great Western Railway absorbed it on 1 July 1882 under an 1881 act of Parliament. Under GWR ownership the line was extended to Newcastle Emlyn in 1895, though passenger services on that branch ended in 1952 and the Carmarthen-Pencader section closed to passengers in 1965, leaving only a short stub into Carmarthen station still in use.
