The Barry Railway Company was a South Wales transportation enterprise that operated both railway lines and dock facilities, incorporated in 1884 as the Barry Dock and Railway Company by coal owners frustrated with congestion and monopolistic pricing at Cardiff Docks under the Taff Vale Railway. Its main line from Trehafod in the Rhondda Valley to Barry opened in 1889 alongside its first dock, and the company specialized in coal exports, surpassing Cardiff as South Wales's largest coal export center by 1910 and setting a global shipment record of 11.09 million long tons of coal in 1913, while also running suburban passenger services between Barry, Cardiff, and the surrounding valleys.
