Anglesey Central Railway

The Anglesey Central Railway was a 17.5 mile standard-gauge railway on Anglesey, Wales, linking the port of Amlwch and the county town of Llangefni with the North Wales Coast Line at Gaerwen, established under an 1863 Act of Parliament with capital of 120,000 pounds and William Bulkeley Hughes as chairman. Its first section opened for freight to Llangefni on December 16, 1864, with passenger services starting in March 1865 and the line reaching Amlwch by June 1867, but the independent company struggled financially and was transferred to the London and North Western Railway for 80,000 pounds in 1876. Passenger service ended on December 5, 1964 under the Beeching Axe rationalization, and industrial freight, mainly serving the Associated Octel chemical plant at Amlwch, continued until 1993; preservation groups have since studied heritage railway and cycling route proposals for the closed line.
