York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway

The York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway was an English railway company formed in 1847 from the merger of the York and Newcastle Railway and the Newcastle and Berwick Railway, both controlled by George Hudson, connecting York, Newcastle and Berwick along what became part of the East Coast Main Line. The company built major engineering works including Newcastle Central Station, the High Level Bridge over the River Tyne, and the viaduct across the River Tweed later named the Royal Border Bridge. After Hudson's exposure for financial irregularities in 1849, the company was merged on 31 July 1854 with the Leeds Northern Railway and the York and North Midland Railway to form the North Eastern Railway.
