Stockton and Darlington Railway

The Stockton and Darlington Railway was a railway company that operated in north-east England from 1825 to 1863, and is recognized as the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives. It opened on September 27, 1825, connecting collieries near Shildon with Darlington and Stockton in County Durham, following years of advocacy and financial backing from the Quaker entrepreneur Edward Pease. George Stephenson served as the railway's chief engineer, and coal wagons were hauled by steam from the outset, though passengers traveled in horse-drawn coaches until steam-hauled carriages were introduced in 1833. The line's success helped drive the growth of Middlesbrough, transforming it from a small settlement into a major town by enabling the movement of coal to ships.
