Cleveland Railway (England)

The Cleveland Railway was an English mineral railway authorised by an 1858 Act of Parliament and opened in 1861 to carry iron ore roughly 13 miles from mines around Guisborough and the Eston Hills, through the Cleveland Hills, to Normanby Jetty on the River Tees near Middlesbrough for shipment to Tyneside and beyond. It ran no passenger service during its independent life. Capitalised at 120,000 pounds, with local landowner Ralph Ward Jackson among its driving forces, the company was absorbed by the North Eastern Railway in 1865; its western section closed in 1873, while the eastern portion later carried passenger stations into the 1960s and its easternmost stretch still serves Boulby Mine as a mineral line today.
