Piraeus, Athens and Peloponnese Railways

The Piraeus, Athens and Peloponnese Railways was a Greek railway company founded in 1882 as a private company, operating metre gauge lines connecting Piraeus and Athens to the Peloponnese. The network eventually grew to 750 kilometers of track with 159 stations. It was nationalized in 1954 and formally absorbed into the Hellenic State Railways in 1962, ending eight decades of independent operation; passenger and freight service on its former lines was suspended in 2011 amid the Greek economic crisis.
