Mayo Clinic is a group medical practice and academic medical center in Rochester, Minnesota, whose three shields stand for patient care, research and education. Its roots lie in the work of Dr. William Worrall Mayo and his sons, who built a practice in Rochester after 1863 and helped found Saint Marys Hospital in 1889. The first building to carry the Mayo Clinic name opened in 1914, and in 1919 the family transferred its assets to a nonprofit entity later called the Mayo Foundation. The cited company history, written around 2000, explains that the foundation also owns Saint Marys and Rochester Methodist hospitals, runs graduate and medical schools, operates sites in Jacksonville, Scottsdale and Phoenix, and had grown into a nonprofit enterprise with more than 32,000 employees.
