HealthSouth

HealthSouth was an American rehabilitative healthcare company founded in 1984 as Amcare, Inc. and headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, growing into a large operator of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals treating stroke, neurological, cardiac, spinal cord, and orthopedic patients. Between 1996 and 2003 its executives, directed by founder Richard Scrushy, carried out an accounting fraud that inflated earnings by a total of 2.7 billion dollars, leading to delisting from the New York Stock Exchange and removal from the S&P 500 once two officers reported the scheme to the FBI. The company avoided indictment by cooperating with investigators, restructured around its core rehabilitation business, and was renamed Encompass Health Corporation in 2018.
