ASR Nederland

ASR Nederland is a major Dutch insurance group based in Utrecht, traded on Euronext Amsterdam under the ticker ASRNL. It was formed in 1997 through the merger of the insurers Stad Rotterdam Verzekeringen, which traced back to 1720, and ETI Amersfoortse, taking the name ASR from initials representing both predecessor companies' home cities. Fortis acquired ASR in 2000 and folded it into its other insurance operations, but when the Dutch government took control of Fortis during the 2008 financial crisis, the finance minister announced on November 21, 2008 that the insurance division would be spun off under the revived ASR name. In 2025 the company expanded by acquiring Onderlinge van 1719, described as the oldest Dutch funeral insurance company.
