The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation is an American global financial services company headquartered in New York City, formed in 2007 through the merger of The Bank of New York and Mellon Financial Corporation. The Bank of New York was founded in 1784 by Alexander Hamilton, making it one of the oldest banks in the United States still operating under a continuous corporate lineage, while Mellon Financial descended from a Pittsburgh banking business founded by Thomas Mellon in the nineteenth century. The combined company, commonly known as BNY Mellon, specializes in custody banking, asset servicing, and investment management, and it ranks as the world's largest custodian bank by assets under custody and administration.
