ConocoPhillips is an American oil and gas exploration and production company headquartered in Houston, Texas, formed by the 2002 merger of Conoco Inc. and Phillips Petroleum, companies whose own histories traced back to the early twentieth century. In 2012 it spun off its refining and marketing operations as the separate company Phillips 66, leaving ConocoPhillips focused on oil and gas exploration and production, and it is one of the largest independent exploration and production companies in the world.
