J Sainsbury plc, trading as Sainsbury's, is a British supermarket chain and the second largest grocery chain in the United Kingdom, headquartered in London. It was founded in 1869 when John James Sainsbury and his wife Mary Ann opened a shop at 173 Drury Lane in Covent Garden under the slogan Quality perfect, prices lower. Sainsbury's was the dominant British grocer for most of the twentieth century until Tesco overtook it in 1995, and it has since held second or third place, briefly falling behind Asda between 2003 and 2014 and again in 2019. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange as part of the FTSE 100 and employed about 140,000 people with revenue of 33.6 billion pounds in 2026.
