Põhjala Brewery

Põhjala Brewery is a craft brewery in Tallinn, Estonia, founded in 2011 by four Estonian beer enthusiasts, Enn Parel, Peeter Keek, Gren Noormets, and Tiit Paananen, who were soon joined by head brewer Chris Pilkington. Its name means northern realm in Estonian, and it is the largest craft brewery in the Baltic states and the only Baltic brewery to appear on Ratebeer's top 100 world breweries list. Its original brewery opened in the Nõmme district of Tallinn in April 2014, and in 2018 the company moved to the Noblessner area with a 4.9 million euro investment, reaching a capacity of 1,200 hectolitres a month and a bottle-filling line of 6,000 bottles an hour, alongside a laboratory, shop, sauna, and 24-tap taproom on site. Its best-selling beer, the India pale ale Virmalised, accounts for more than a quarter of production, and in 2021 about 65 percent of output was exported, chiefly to the Netherlands, Finland, France, China, the United Kingdom, and the United States; the brewery reported turnover of 5.02 million euros in 2025.
