Woodburn Stud

Woodburn Stud was an American horse breeding farm in Woodford County, Kentucky, about ten miles from Lexington. It began in the eighteenth century as a land grant to General Hugh Mercer for his service in the American Revolutionary War. The Scottish immigrant Robert Alexander, who came to Virginia from Scotland in 1786, bought the Mercer estate around 1790, and under the guidance of his son Robert A. Alexander in the nineteenth century, Woodburn Stud became the birthplace of Kentucky's Thoroughbred industry.
