Royal Caribbean Group is an American cruise line holding company headquartered in Miami, Florida, the second largest cruise operator in the world by passengers carried after Carnival Corporation & plc. It was founded in 1968 in Oslo, Norway, as Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, a joint venture of three Norwegian shipping companies formed to build cruise ships specifically for the developing Caribbean cruise trade out of Miami, rather than converting older ocean liners as many early cruise operators did. The company's flagship brand, Royal Caribbean International, is known for building some of the largest passenger cruise ships in the world, and the wider group also owns the Celebrity Cruises brand.
