Rolls-Royce Motors was the car company that was split away from Rolls-Royce Limited in 1973 and made Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars at Crewe in Cheshire. The engineering group Vickers bought it in 1980 and kept it until 1998, when Vickers sold it to Volkswagen. Volkswagen kept the Bentley business and the Crewe works, while the right to use the Rolls-Royce name on cars went to BMW, so this company is the Crewe era maker of the cars that came before the Goodwood built Phantom of 2003.
