Why is the company called Toyota rather than Toyoda, the founding family's own name?
Toyota was founded by Kiichiro Toyoda and incorporated on August 28, 1937. Because the family name Toyoda literally means fertile rice paddies in Japanese, the company deliberately adopted the distinct spelling Toyota so it would not be associated with old fashioned farming.
