Unicorn Riot is a decentralized, nonprofit media collective based in St. Paul, Minnesota, founded by a group of activist journalists who began meeting in Minneapolis in 2014 and registered as an educational nonprofit the following year. The collective operates without a formal hierarchy, making editorial decisions by consensus among roughly ten members, and produces live streams of protests and political rallies, investigative reporting, video packages, podcasts, and documents obtained through open records requests. It is funded by viewer donations and grants and releases its content under a Creative Commons license, with additional presence in Boston, Denver, Philadelphia, and South Africa.
